Become a buddy!

The Kiron Buddy Program connects Kiron students with local learners. The program aims to facilitate a mutual exchange between partners. The core goal of the program is for Kiron students to receive support during their Kiron studies and for the buddies to gain unique insight into the experience of Kiron students.

What’s in it for me?

  • Meet a talented and motivated student from a different part of the world
  • Give and receive support during your and your buddy’s academic journey
  • Learn how Kiron’s model removes barriers to higher education
  • Learn how innovative digital learning methods can help refugees
  • Support a refugee through his or her arrival and integration into a new home
  • Develop and practice goal-setting strategies and techniques to manage and achieve your goals
  • Participate in a buddyship that can become a tremendous benefit to both partners

How does it work?

Once you have signed up for the program and entered all your information(!), the process of finding you a buddy usually takes one to two months. Buddy matching is done based on a number of variables such as your city of residence as well as your area of study. We try to find you an offline buddy who lives in the same city, but it that isn’t possible we match you with an online buddy in a different city. After you sign up and enter your information, we start looking for a buddy for you and notify you via email as soon as we find one.

Buddy pairs meet once a week for one to two hours – either online or offline. Each of the buddies sets and monitors their own personal learning goals. In their weekly meetings, buddies discuss their goals and learning experiences. A buddy pair can support each other in overcoming academic challenges and celebrate academic successes together.

What do we expect from you?

Many Kiron students are eager to meet their buddies and can hardly wait to do so. Please only sign up for the program if you are willing to commit one to two hours a week to your buddyship for a period of at least 12 weeks. That said, some of our students are very busy not only with their studies but with many other issues as well. So, while we encourage you to develop and articulate clear expectations and boundaries, you may need to have some patience before your buddyship reaches its full potential.

How do we support you?

As soon as you are matched with a buddy, you receive the Kiron Buddy Handbook – the bible for how to be a good buddy. This handbook serves as a guideline for your first meetings and the ongoing development of your buddyship. At the beginning of the program, buddies also have the opportunity to join an online training session, where they can learn more about the components of the program, meet buddies and Kiron students as well as Kiron’s Buddy Team. In addition, if necessary, buddies can contact the Buddy and Counseling Team on demand to receive support, counseling and supervision.
