Since December 2017, Kiron and BASF have been working together to support refugees in the Rhine-Neckar region to access educational opportunities. The aim of the project is not just to recruit new students to enable them to begin their online studies with Kiron, but to create a supportive online community and help connect them with universities or other organizations in the region. To achieve this, we at Kiron are further developing our community tools on Kiron Campus and engaging in active dialogue with the students and partners. Especially students who are not located in an urban area often lack access to learning opportunities and resources and can hence benefit from an active online community and support.
By the end of 2019, 62 students residing in the Rhine-Neckar region were active on Kiron Campus, 20 % of them were female. Two of them have already successfully started a regular study program at a university. By the end of 2020, Kiron aims to host at least 90 active students from the region and to develop partnerships with local organizations to further support them and to build a sustainable local infrastructure for Kiron’s learners.
